I have to surrender to the unruly medium of encaustic. Like sailor to sea, I make peace with it. Only then can I can get the wax-embedded pigment to rise to the challenge of water: to produce the transient or translucent effects I seek. There is a materiality to my paintings. My process and studio practice are messy. Gravity is engaged. Pigment is poured, blown and manhandled. Patterns evoking the sea, sand and sky emerge and I coax them, exploiting the materials to my end. Color and form become sea foam carried by the wind or the purposeful movement within a wave. I rely heavily on daily observation at the beach, on the boat, along the harbor and then I work in the studio intuitively, expressively. I began working in encaustic during my second residency, which was in Breckenridge, Colorado, in June 2009. At that point I had been working in traditional and experimental oils for several years, painting full time and showing consistently. Based on time spent in Colorado and at the Vermont Studio Center, I decided that in order to raise the level of my creative product and tackle (and master) this tough medium, I needed to put the marketing/commercial side aside and concentrate fully in the studio to develop my own encaustic process. I think this time, which was three full years spent in practice and dedicated artistic solitude with a singular goal, was important to raise the level of the art I make. Most recently, I have begun work on American flag themed pieces that combine encaustic and the poured oil process I developed Residencies 2009 Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont 2009/10 Tin Shop Residency, Breckenridge, Colo.
